Feb. 24 — Friday Fishing, 9 to 11 a.m. Learn about ice fishing equipment, tools and tackle and try to lure in a fish. Dependent on weather conditions; call 814-625-9369 to verify if and where event will be held.

February through May — Fly Tying for Beginners: A Workshop Program Series. Join the park naturalist and other beginners one Saturday a month for fly-tying instruction and watershed education. Learn how to tie flies, discover the importance of water quality, and use the flies you created to try to catch fish. The last program in May will consist of a fly fishing basics program where fly rods will be available for casting instruction and fly fishing on the banks of F.J. Sayers Lake. You must provide your own transportation throughout the park. All materials will be provided, but you may bring your own equipment. A fee applies and must be paid before Feb. 25. March 3 — Golden Eagle Voyage Birding Weekend, all-inclusive rates apply. Spend an event-filled weekend in central Pennsylvania with the opportunity to view migrating hawks and golden eagles from atop Tussey Mountain. Package includes two nights accommodations, two group dinners, evening owl program and walk, two breakfasts, hot picnic lunch followed by a live birds of prey program and your choice of a locally and sustainably crafted birdfeeder.

Feb. 24 — Winter Nature or Snowshoe Hike, 1 p.m. Open to all ages; call to register. In the event of really icy trails or dangerous driving conditions, the hike will be cancelled.

March 2 — Homeschool Day: Pennsylvania’s Environmental Heroes, 10 a.m. Call to register by Feb. 28. Designed for those in fourth through 12th grades. Do you know who Rachel Carson, Gifford Pinchot, J. Horace McFarland, Maurice Goddard or Ralph Abele were? They shared a love of nature and the environment and each played important roles in protecting the natural resources of Pennsylvania.

March 8 — Pebble Puppies, 1 p.m. Discover rocks and minerals during this program at the Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center. A story and hands-on activities are included in this DiscoverE program for kids ages 4-8 and their parents. Call by Feb 25 to register.

March 10-11 — Geology Rocks, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone over the age of 9 may register to attend either day of this program. Hands-on sessions include acting out the rock cycle, making a “rock collection,” identifying fossils and minerals, and having a geo-scavenger hunt. Learn how you to profitably run a “mine” while doing minimal environmental damage. Registration is required by March 3. Scouts should register early, as only a limited number will be accepted. Bring a lunch and drinks. Instructors include geologic scientist Aaron Bierly, geologic consultant Shana Tritsch and environmental educator Mary Ann Haladay-Bierly.

Feb. 25 through March 25 — Coffee with the Birds, 9 a.m. Free. Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or cocoa indoors and watch birds visiting the feeders just outside the classroom window. Through March, join in on the Project Feeder Watch counts and learn about each bird species, their food preferences and how winter bird feeder counts help scientists learn more about the health of the environment.
