Susquehanna TU chapter to offer fly-tying classes

The Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited will hold a seven-week fly-tying course beginning Tuesday and continuing through April 4. It is open to the public and will be held weekly from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, rear of 102 E. Third St.

The free course will include an instructive manual, tools and materials to be used during the sessions. Beginners and all skill levels are welcomed. Instructors will include notable local fly tiers.

Audubon hosts wildlife rehabilitator

Lycoming Audubon will present a program titled “A Walk on the Wild Side” with Robyn Graboski at its public meeting on Wednesday.

She is the founder and executive director of Centre Wildlife Care, a non-profit, donation-funded, wildlife rehabilitation center in Port Matilda, Centre County. The facility cares for injured, orphaned, sick and displaced wildlife and is staffed by trained volunteers.

Rehabilitative care is provided to over 1,500 mammals, birds and reptiles every year. Lycoming Audubon transports sick and injured birds from Lycoming and Clinton counties to the facility where they receive excellent care.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in James V. Brown Library’s Lowry Room, on the third floor of the Welch Wing, 19 E. Fourth St. The presentation follows at 6:30 and both are free and open to the public.

Graboski likely will be assisted with her presentation by some of her “ambassador” four-legged and winged residents.

TU chapter to teach fly tying

LOCK HAVEN — The Lloyd Wilson Chapter of Trout Unlimited will hold its annual fly tying classes from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays beginning this week and continuing through March 23 at the Citizen Hose Fire Co.

A small fee applies for youths and adults.

Fly patterns and instructors change weekly, and instructors will be from the local chapter and from Outcast Anglers Guide Service, of Mill Hall.

‘Step Outdoors’ and have some fun

The Step Outdoors Winter Outings series continues in Tioga County with the following free events. It is open to people of all ages, including children with adult supervision.

• Friday — Free planetarium show and open house, 7 p.m., George B. Strait Planetarium, Grant Science Center, Mansfield University. Presenter and physics professor Dr. Elaine Farkas will lead a 45-minute exploration of the winter night sky, including Orion’s belt and distant galaxies. Afterward, Tim Morey, a natural resource specialist with the Hills Creek State Park Complex, will provide information about stargazing opportunities at Cherry Springs State Park in Coudersport and attendees’ own backyards as well as about local resources for those interested in amateur astronomy. • Saturday — Cross-country skiing and snowshoe mini-clinics, 9 a.m. to noon, main pavilion, Mill Cove Environmental Area near Mansfield. Those who have skis and snowshoes should bring them, but a limited number of skis and snowshoes will be available to use for free during the clinics and afterward to explore area trails. If conditions allow, ski track will be set. Depending on the amount of snow, Daryl Warren, a volunteer with the Asaph Trail Club, will lead a relatively easy, 1- or 2-mile loop hike or snowshoe adventure into Pennsylvania game lands at 10 a.m. The clinics will be held concurrently as interest exists. Knife show returns to area

LEWISBURG — The Keystone Blade Association will hold its annual knife show at the Country Cupboard Inn this coming weekend. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 26.

Try yoga in the woods

TUNKHANNOCK — The Endless Mountains Nature Center, 1309 Vosburg Road, will offer hatha yoga, led by Annmarie Ciccarelli, through May. A fee applies per class.

Hatha yoga is a slow, meditative style of yoga, focused on breath awareness and proper alignment. The slow-flow class links breath with movement to help bring focus to the present moment and quiet the mind.

It is designed for all levels and beginners are welcome. Classes will be held from 10 to 11:15 a.m. and may be held indoors during the winter but outside on beautiful days.

Classes are planned for March 4 and 18; April 1 and 22; and May 6 and 20.

Ciccarelli received hatha yoga teaching certification from Shambhava Yoga Center in Rollinsville, Colorado and also is certified to teach yoga for wellness and meditation in the shambhava tradition. On some Saturdays, alternate teacher Matt Fox will lead a bikram-style yoga.

Take a hike under the full moon

TUNKHANNOCK — The Endless Mountains Nature Center, 1309 Vosburg Road, will hold a series of full moon hikes this year at its grounds in Wyoming County.

The center’s naturalist will lead each 90-minute hike on trails in the area. All ages are welcome.

Hikes are planned to begin at 7 p.m. March 12, 7:30 p.m. April 11, 8 p.m. May 10, 8:30 p.m. June 9, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6, 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5, 6 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5 p.m. Dec. 3.

Hikes will not be held in July or August.

‘Coal Collections’ events continue

LEWISBURG — The Weis Center for the Performing Arts and the Place Studies program of the Bucknell Center for Sustainability and the Environment will hold a variety of events related to anthracite coal. “Coal Collections: Local, National and International Stories” will include a series of free noon lectures in the Weis Center Atrium lobby, 1 Dent Drive. The series includes:

“Art and Visual Culture of the Anthracite Coal Region,” March 23, Greg Stuart, Samek Art Museum;

“Immigrant Experiences of the Anthracite Coal Region,” March 28, a panel of community members and faculty discuss the enduring legacy of the immigrant experience;

“Pennsylvania’s Anthracite Coal Region: Present to Future,” March 30, an interdisciplinary panel of faculty and community members discuss present and future prospects of the state’s anthracite coal region;

“The Creation of Anthracite Fields,” March 31, G.C. Waldrep, associate professor of English, will interview Julia Wolfe, composer of Anthracite Fields; Laurie McCants, Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble and adviser to the project; and Beth Willer, conductor for the Weis Center performance.

Sportsmen group to hold banquet

HUGHESVILLE — The Consolidated Sportsmen of Muncy Creeks will hold its 57th annual banquet on March 25 at the Hughesville Fire Hall social center. Doors open at 5 p.m. and a buffet dinner starts at 6.

The evening also features a gun and rod auction, live auction and Chinese auctions, a special program and door prizes.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Morgan Craft, whose competitive skeet shooting successes have made her a local celebrity in Sullivan and Lycoming counties. She began shooting .22-caliber rifles at age 8 and steadily progressed through the years under the tuleage of her parents and grandparents. In 2011, she was selected as a member of the USA Shooting Team in woman’s skeet.

Since then, she has traveled to many countries to compete. She has won key competitions, including the gold medal as the world champion in women’s skeet in Lonato, Italy, in September 2015. As a result of that win, she secured a spot on the USA Women’s Skeet Team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

The spring 2017 stocking schedule for the trout raised by the club will be available at the banquet.

Hunting, fishing show planned

CLARKS SUMMIT — The 16th annual J&B Sportsmen’s Hunting and Fishing Show and Sale returns to the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 25.

General admission begins at 10 a.m., but the public may pay an extra $5 to get in an hour earlier. An entry fee also applies for general admission.

The show features vendors interested in buying, selling, trading and collecting. Items featured may include hunting and fishing licenses from Pennsylvania, shell boxes, old lures, plugs, reels, decoys, fishing rods, books, posters, knives, traps, pictures, plaques, and hunting and fishing patches from Pennsylvania.

48th annual rock, mineral show at new site

WYSOX — The Che-Hanna Rock & Mineral Club will hold its 48th annual show at a new location in 2017. The show is planned for March 25-26 at the Wysox Volunteer Fire Co., 111 Lake Road.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 25 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the following day. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for youth and free for those under age 8.

Club members and museums will have their exhibits on display; lapidary and geode-cutting demonstrations will be given; and door prizes will be awarded.

For children, a scavenger hunt and mini mine will be offered. A fluorescent show will be held.

Dealers will sell minerals, fossils, jewelry and lapidary.
