Former athletic director gets probation, fine for sexual relationship with female student

WELLSBORO – Sherri L. Prough, 43, of 283 Kelsey St., was sentenced in Tioga County Court Monday to serve 24 months of probation and pay a $200 fine for corruption of minors regarding a former student with whom she carried on a sexual relationship until after the girl turned 18.

Prough, who was an athletic director at Wellsboro Area High School, corrupted the morals of a 17-year-old female student by having sexual relations with her, according to court documents.

Borough police did not learn of the relationship between the two until Dec. 21, 2011, when Superintendent Chris Morral reported that the victim came to him and told him about it.

According to police, the relationship began on May 3, 2007, at Prough’s residence and continued through the victim’s senior year and after her graduation in Prough’s office, in the locker room and in the athletic training room.

Prough also gave her a key to her personal office and the victim could come and go as she pleased, and Prough used the school-owned cellphone and computer to communicate with the victim.

Prough also passed the victim with a 100-percent grade for her 1-mile run, knowing she didn’t run a single lap.

The victim and Prough stayed sexually active until after she turned 18, continuing to have sex at various locations including in the school, Prough’s home and vehicle, and the victim’s home.

Prough was fired in 2012.
