Man escapes house fire

MILDRED – An elderly man safely fled his burning home on Third Street moments after it caught fire about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to Mildred Fire Chief Josh Fitzgerald.

Heavy black smoke was pouring from the two-story home and flames were shooting from windows on two sides, Fitzgerald said.

The fire victim, who lived alone and whose identity was not released, already was out of the house when firefighters arrived on the scene, Fitzgerald said.

The fire was declared under control within 15 minutes, but firefighters were on the scene for more than three hours, dousing hot spots, Fitzgerald said.

The resident was taken by ambulance to an area hospital as a precautionary measure, Fitzgerald added.

There was nothing suspicious about the fire, but the cause remained under investigation, he said.

In addition to Mildred, firefighters from Dushore, Laporte, Eagles Mere, Muncy Valley and New Albany responded to the fire. The local chapter of the American Red Cross also assisted at the scene.

The victim was believed to be staying with relatives.
