Police: Jersey Shore DUI offender had child in car

JERSEY SHORE – A routine ambulance call to an Allegheny Street apartment resulted in the capture of a man wanted on a city police warrant of driving under the influence of intoxicants, Tiadaghton Valley Regional Police said.

Police and paramedics were called to 1312 1/2 Allegheny St. to investigate a report of an unresponsive male in the apartment on March 27. They found the 45-year-old occupant, Shawn Krause, conscious but intoxicated, police said.

After being cleared medically, he was turned over to police custody after it was learned that there was a warrant for his arrest, charging him with driving under the influence of intoxicants at West Third and Pine streets in Williamsport on Feb. 10.

On that night, Krause was stopped about 8:50 p.m. for driving his Volkswagen Jetta without his lights. He told a city Patrolman Justin Ottaviano that he had just left the Lycoming County Prison, where he was visiting his girlfriend and he must have forgotten to turn on his headlights, court records state.

“His eyes were glassy. His speech and movements were sluggish and slow,” the officer described Krause in an affidavit. Riding in the car was Krause’s young son, the officer said.

In checking the National Crime Information Center, Ottaviano learned that Krause’s license was suspended for a prior drunk driving conviction. Krause failed a series of field sobriety tests, the officer said.

Lab tests revealed his blood-alcohol content level at that time was .14, police said.

A warrant was filed after Krause failed to respond to a summons that was sent in the mail.

Krause was taken from his apartment on March 27 and brought before District Judge Jerry C. Lepley, who ruled than Krause would have to spend the night in jail because he was “very intoxicated.”

Krause admitted to Lepley “I had five beers today.”

The next day, when Krause was brought before Lepley a second time, he told the judge “I barely remember talking to you last night.” He was released on $1,500 bail.
