Police: Father passed out from heroin with 2 children in his care
Hungry and wanting something to eat at home, an 8-year-old went upstairs to get his father, who he found sprawled out unconscious on a bedroom floor.
Police and paramedics were dispatched to the home at 820 Penn St. on June 13. As paramedics worked on the 40-year-old father, Joel Kendall, police found a needle, a spoon and what was believed to be “an empty heroin bag” near the man, according to an affidavit.
Police did not say if the child called 911 or if the boy alerted someone else who in turn made the call.
The home was in a “state of disarray,” police said.
“There was a fresh needle mark on Kendall’s arm,” an officer said in the affidavit.
Besides the 8-year-old, there also was a 3-year-old boy, police said. The boys’ mother had left the two in Kendall’s care while she was at work, police said.
Kendall was taken to the hospital and placed hours later in the Lycoming County Prison on a parole violation. He was arraigned Friday before District Allen P. Page III on charges of recklessly endangering, endangering the welfare of children and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was recommitted in lieu of $10,000 bail.
