Intoxicated patient assaults hospital staff
Several city police officers rushed to the Williamsport Regional Medical Center at 700 High St. late Monday night when an intoxicated patient attacked a nurse and assaulted an emergency medical technician inside the hospital’s emergency room.
Michael J. Deangelo Jr., 26, of 434 Sheridan St., is accused of punching hospital employee Mark A. Paulhamus several times in the nose when Paulhamus stepped forward and tried to protect the nurse, police said.
“Yea, I did this for fun,” Deangelo told police, who responded to the hospital about 11:15 p.m.
“There was an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from Deangelo’s body,” one officer wrote in an affidavit. Hospital security already had the man restrained when officers arrived on the scene.
Deangelo was arraigned before District Judge Gary A. Whiteman on charges of aggravated and simple assault, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.
