Man charged following high-speed chase

WELLSBORO – Shane R. Harnish, 28, of 33 Back St., Morris, faces several charges following a high-speed chase with borough police Aug. 10.

According to documents filed at District Judge Rob Repard’s office, police tried to stop Harnish after they noticed he was driving with no lights on at night along Central Avenue.

Instead of stopping, police said, Harnish took off out of the borough on Route 287, driving in excess of 70 mph in a 45-mph zone.

Police said he came to a “skidding stop” at Nessmuk Lane and fled on foot toward the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources building.

He then got back into his vehicle after police returned to their car, having lost sight of him, and continued driving toward Morris.

Police tracked him down at the Penn Wells Lodge and took him into custody.

Harnish was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

He was jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is Tuesday.
