Shooting victim’s condition improves
The medical condition of 28-year-old city gunshot victim Christopher Downs improved over the weekend from critical to serious, according to a nursing supervisor at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Downs, of the city, was shot several times in the back allegedly by ex-girlfriend Christina Marie Emerick, 23, in the 2100 block of Newberry Street last Monday, city police said.
Emerick, of 2116 Hillside Drive, was arrested at the scene and remains jailed in the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $500,000 bail. She has been charged with attempted homicide and related offenses.
Police said the couple separated just two days before the 6 p.m. shooting. A neighbor who witnessed the shooting managed to disarm Emerick as she beat Downs with her revolver after she ran out of bullets, police said.
Also at Geisinger is bicyclist Derek S. Viera, 44, of South Williamsport, who was injured when his bike and a Schwann’s Food Service truck collided on Campbell Street, just north of West Fourth Street on Friday afternoon. He was reported in serious condition, the nursing supervisor said.
