Alleged break-ins of parked cars leads to 70+ theft charges
To support his drug addiction problem, 19-year-old Steven Jack Joy stole items from more than two dozen cars in Loyalsock Township and sold some of the articles, according to state police.
Joy, of 541 Woodland Ave., is alleged to have stolen iPods, GPS units, digital cameras, purses handbags, cash, even Penn State parking passes from vehicles on more than a dozen township streets between mid-June and late September 2012, Trooper Michael Shipman said.
Joy faces more than 70 charges, including 29 counts of theft from motor vehicle, 31 counts of receiving stolen property, seven counts of criminal mischief, two counts each of theft and conspiracy to criminal mischief as well as one count each of burglary, possession of heroin and marijuana.
Many items were recovered at his home last Sept. 30 when his father allowed state troopers to search the property.
“Just as the search began, the teenager arrived at the house and admitted to investigators that he knew it was only a matter of time until he got caught,” Shipman said.
Police recovered 46 stolen articles from the home and an additional 20 stolen items from the teen’s Crown Victoria, Shipman said. A bag of heroin and drug paraphernalia also were recovered from the house, Shipman said.
In addition to Joy, Shipman has arrested two other men, Shaun Anthony Dunn, and Rory Devell Herbert Jr, with allegedly conspiring with Joy to steal items from at least three cars overnight last Sept. 28.
Shipman said Dunn allegedly stole a handgun from the 1900 block of Sheridan Street, an XBox 360 from the 2000 block of Blair Street and cash from the 1700 block of Becht Road.
Dunn, 19, of 970 First St., has been charged with three counts of theft from motor vehicle, seven counts of receiving stolen property, two counts of conspiracy to criminal mischief and one count of conspiracy to access of device fraud.
Herbert, also 19, of 908 Almond St. and formerly of the 300 block of Grove Street, seven counts of conspiracy to receiving stolen property, three counts of conspiracy to theft from motor vehicle and three additional counts of conspiracy.
Shipman said Joy’s alleged thefts spanned a wide area of the township involving numerous locations, including the 2400 block of Vista Avenue, the 200 block of Lose Avenue, the 800 block of Lafayette Parkway, the 2000 and 2400 blocks of Sheridan Street, the 1600 block of Marlin Parkway, the 1400 block of Shiffler Avenue, the 1700 block of Becht Road and the 2000 block of Reed Street.
Joy has also been charged with allegedly stealing a $350 from an open garage in the 300 block of Pearson Avenue, Shipman said.
All three men have been arraigned before District Judge Gary A. Whiteman. Joy remains jailed in the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail while Dunn is incarcerated in lieu of $15,000 bail and Herbert is free on $10,000 bail.
