Mansfield man charged with taking pistol

MANSFIELD – Cameron A. May, 24, of 2285 Joe Hill Road, Roaring Branch, was charged by state police after he allegedly took a semi-automatic pistol from a Union Township residence Sept. 23.

According to documents filed at District Judge James Carlson’s office, May was charged with theft and receiving stolen property after he took the Beretta 9 mm semi-automatic pistol belonging to Christopher J. Route from the basement of Route’s residence in Union Township.

Police said Route had left it on a bench in his basement following a weekend of shooting, noticed it was missing Sept. 22 and suspected his girlfriend’s son, May.

May initially denied any knowledge of the missing firearm, and said he saw three unknown kids running down the street in the area of the residence.

Police said he finally admitted to taking it and trading it to a group of four black males for heroin in Williamsport on Sept. 23.

May was committed in lieu of $80,000 bail, waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday and his county court arraignment was set for Oct. 28.
