Police: Men stole bikes in 2 incidents

Drew Matthew Reynolds, 18, of 509 Reynolds St., South Williamsport, was walking in the 300 block of Clark Street on the morning of July 10 when he spotted a bicycle and decided to just take it because “his legs were tired,” borough police said.

However, the ride soon was over because police caught up with him at West Southern Avenue and Fisher Street after someone saw him on the bike and knew it did not belong to him, according to court records. The bike belonged to a juvenile, police said.

Reynolds recently was arraigned before District Judge Gary A. Whiteman on charges of theft and receiving stolen property and released on $1,500 bail.

In another bicycle theft case, Matthew Joseph Sortman, 20, of 1540 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore, allegedly stole Joe Kriner’s bike from the 1200 block of Walnut Street in Jersey Shore on Aug. 3, according to the Tiadaghton Valley Regional Police.

The bike was recovered hours later then Sortman was caught riding it in the 300 block of Washington Street in Jersey Shore, police said.

In addition to being charged with theft and receiving stolen property, Sortman faces an additional charge of tampering with evidence since he allegedly tried to change the bike’s appearance.

Following his recent arraignment before District Judge Jerry C. Lepley, Sortman was released on $3,500 bail.
