Couple charged with taking purse left in store cart
MANSFIELD – A Canton couple who had been shopping at Wal-Mart were charged by state police with taking another woman’s purse that inadvertently was left in a shopping cart.
According to documents filed at District Judge James Carlson’s office, Chrystal J. Spencer, 31, and Nathan M. Secrest, 25, both of 150 W. Union St., Canton, were charged with theft, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy following the incident on Aug. 4.
Beverly D. Moore accidentally left her purse in a cart when she returned it to the cart cage in the store’s parking lot, police said.
Spencer and Secrest allegedly saw the purse as they exited the store, then ran to their car and drove around to the cart cage, police said. Spencer jumped out and grabbed the purse, police allege.
They then drove to the KFC parking lot where they rummaged through the purse, taking about $300 in cash and discarding the rest, which included car keys, a cellphone, driver’s license and credit cards, officers reported. The items had a total value of $1,000, according to police.
Both Spencer and Secrest were issued summonses to appear at a Jan. 15 preliminary hearing.
