Charges filed in animal cruelty case

ELKLAND – State police at Mansfield have filed charges against an Elkland man in the case of a young dog found dead inside an animal carrier earlier this month.

According to police, Matthew Scott Stone, 27, of Elkland, was charged with a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty and arraigned before District Judge C. Roger McRae on Tuesday.

Police said the dog had been left in the woods off Cummings Creek Road in Farmington Township since Oct. 3, and the leads they received in the investigation into the dog’s death led them to focus on Stone.

Stone was issued a summons to appear at a March 11 preliminary hearing before McRae.
