Man killed, woman hurt in city crash

One man was killed and a woman seriously injured Saturday in a late-night, one-vehicle crash on West Fourth Street, just east of Locust Street, according to city police.

Robert C. Walker Jr., 58, of the city, was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma he suffered when the Ford Explorer he was driving crashed head-on into a tree on the north side of Fourth Street about 11:15 p.m., according to Chief Deputy County Coroner Jerold Ross said.

“Walker was attempting to pass another vehicle, described as a maroon-colored PT Cruiser, on the right side as it was traveling in the northern-most lane,” Assistant Police Chief Timothy Miller said.

“A female passenger was flown to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for treatment of severe injuries,” Miller said.

The woman’s identity had not been released as of Sunday night.

Walker, who was not wearing a seat belt, had two addresses – one in the 600 block of Market Street and another in the 700 block of Park Avenue, investigators said.

“Witnesses reported seeing both vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash. It is believed that both drivers may have been involved in some type of incident before the crash,” Miller said.

“Anyone with information about the PT Cruiser or the incident is asked to call police at 570-327-7560 or 570-327-7529,” Miller said.
