Murder charge for teen in police officer’s death
NEW YORK (AP) – A 16-year-old boy has been indicted on a murder charge in the fire-related death of a veteran New York Police Department officer.
Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson says Marcell Dockery faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted. Dockery already has been arraigned on assault, arson and reckless-endangerment charges. He’s being held without bail.
Authorities say Dockery lit a mattress on fire in a Coney Island apartment building last weekend.
Police say Dockery set the fire out of boredom. They say officer Dennis Guerra and his partner were overcome by carbon monoxide and smoke while responding.
Guerra died Wednesday. His partner remains in critical but stable condition.
Guerra’s funeral is scheduled for Monday.
