2 men arrested after bank robbery

TOWANDA – Chaz Talada, 18, of Columbia Crossroads, and Zachary Etka, 23, of Richmond, Va., were arrested and charged with armed robbery following a bank robbery in East Smithfield on Thursday.

Talada walked into the Citizen’s and Northern Bank about 1 p.m. and brandished a handgun, demanding money from the tellers, state police said.

Police said Talada took the money and fled west on Springfield Road driving a green Subaru.

Etka remained in the passenger seat of the vehicle during the robbery, officers allege.

At about 1:40 p.m., a New York state trooper saw the Subaru in the parking lot of the state line Dandy Mini-Mart on the Berwick Turnpike in Ridgebury Township and called for backup.

After a Pennsylvania state police trooper and a Chemung County sheriff’s deputy arrived, the two were taken into custody without incident.

Police said both admitted to their involvement in the robbery.

A search of the vehicle yielded a handgun and the stolen money, officers said.

Both men were arraigned before District Judge Jonathan Wilcox and committed to Bradford County Correctional Facility in lieu of $400,000 bail, pending a preliminary hearing.
