Man accused of fleeing police

WELLSBORO – Joseph E. Burkholder, 30, of 22 Buffard Riverside Estate Trailer Park, Lawrenceville, was charged by borough police recently with fleeing or eluding police and giving false identification information to law enforcement.

According to documents filed at District Judge Rob Repard’s office, police saw Burkholder driving erratically in the Pudgie’s Pizza restaurant lot April 24.

Burkholder went inside to buy a six-pack of beer and left with police following.

Police said when they tried to pull him over he fled, stopping for the light on Charleston and Main streets, where he and his female passenger switched seats.

Police finally stopped him on Old Tioga Street, where he gave his name as Justin K. Burkholder and said his date of birth was May 18, 1988.

He then fled from officers and drove at a high rate of speed on Tioga Street, passing several vehicles on the left and right, forcing them off the roadway.

The two then fled the car after crashing it on Spore Hollow Road. Police said they found several beer bottles and syringes inside the vehicle.

Burkholder was jailed in lieu of $70,000 bail and his preliminary hearing set for May 6.
