Township man runs but still ends up in jail

When Old Lycoming Township police and a county probation officer arrived at Brett Michael Smeal’s home on Merrill Avenue on Sunday afternoon to take him into custody for a probation violation, the 22-year-old man asked if he would be allowed to change his clothes before going to the Lycoming County Prison.

Smeal, of 1840 Merrill Ave., was granted permission, but instead of changing his clothes, he ducked into the family’s garage and took off running, according to court records.

He was eventually captured and automatically placed in the prison. No details about where and when he was caught were released.

Smeal, on probation for sex offenses involving a juvenile, was arraigned Thursday before District Judge James H. Sortman on count of escape and recommitted in lieu of $50,000 bail.
