Indiana County mother guilty in son’s drowning

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) – A jury has found a western Pennsylvania woman guilty of involuntary manslaughter and other charges in the death of her 13-month-old son, who drowned while he was bathing unattended with two toddler siblings.

Twenty-seven-year-old Tonya Thomas, of White Township in Indiana County, was found guilty Wednesday. Prosecutors say that in February 2013 she left Ryden Thomas Jr. and his 2- and 3-year-old siblings unattended in the bathtub and later found him face-down in the water. Defense attorneys claimed that the boy’s drowning was a tragic accident.

Thomas also was found guilty of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and three counts of endangering the welfare of children.

The boy’s father, Wesley Thomas, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor child endangerment and was sentenced to three months to two years in prison.
