Injured fire police officer out of hospital
A South Williamsport volunteer fire police officer injured earlier this month when he was struck by a van while trying to assist with traffic control at an accident on Route 15 has been discharged by from the hospital.
In an accident report made public this week, state police said Grover E. Danley, 51, of South Williamsport, was struck by a vehicle driven by Leonard L. Leitzel, of Allenwood, in front of the state Department of Transportation stockpile about 8:40 p.m. on June 8.
Danley, who was not wearing a reflective vest or have a flashlight with him, was attempting to slow down traffic due to a crash south of him, police said.
“It was dusk and the highway was wet with intermittent rain. Danley had entered the scene on foot, traveling from the east to the west, across the northbound lanes, from where he had parked” his car along the berm, the investigating trooper said.
Leitzel was unable to see Danley until the two were in close proximity of one another, the trooper said. Upon seeing Danley, Leitzel steered to miss him, but was unable to avoid striking him, the trooper said.
Danley was treated at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, and discharged. No charges were filed against the driver due to the nature of the crash, police said.
