Employee accused of stealing from store
Saying he was unable to keep up with his bills, a former manager of Surplus City on Lycoming Creek Road has admitted that he stole in excess of $10,000 from the business during a five-month period this year, according to Old Lycoming Township.
Allen Michael Grimes, is accused of stealing $10,483 from the business at 3365 Lycoming Creek between Feb. 14 and June 14, police said. He was employed at the business at the time, police said.
“He allegedly suspended transactions after accepting money for items from customers. He then canceled the transaction and put the money in his pocket,” Patrolman Robert Cochran said in an affidavit.
Grimes, 49, of 21 Leuck Drive, Cogan Station, is alleged to have stolen money from the business nearly on “a daily basis,” Cochran said.
Grimes estimated he stole about $6,000, but court records state it was much higher than that. He admitted to taking money because “everything that had happened to him over the last few years had finally caught up (with him). Bills kept coming and he couldn’t pay them,” Cochran said.
Following his arraignment last week before District Judge James Sortman, Grimes was released on $40,000 bail.
