Man gets life term after guilty plea in trio of 2013 murders

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A man charged in three separate murders in Philadelphia 2 1/2 years ago has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that 21-year-old Justin Mackie was scheduled for trial but pleaded guilty Tuesday to three first-degree murder charges in a deal that spared him a possible death sentence.

Mackie was arrested in July 2013 following a shootout with police and FBI agents that killed his 21-year-old stepbrother, Tevin Hammond. He also pleaded guilty Tuesday to taking part in an armed robbery and the shooting of a cab driver in June 2013.
