Girl, 11, dies in ATV rollover on Sunday

MAINESBURG – A young girl died in a rollover accident Sunday in Sullivan Township, according to state police.

The victim, whose identity was not released, died Sunday night at Troy Guthrie Hospital, police confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

According to Mansfield Fire Chief Jim Welch, the 11-year-old Charleston Township girl was visiting family friends and she and another child were taking turns riding an all-terrain vehicle when the accident occurred Sunday afternoon.

“They were riding a four-wheel ATV in the field,” Welch said.

“It sounded like no one really saw the crash but noticed she hadn’t come back from her ride after a few minutes,” he added.

Welch said the girl, who has not been identified, was by herself on the ATV and “without a helmet, unfortunately.”

“Something happened that no one saw, and she was found lying on the ground next to ATV,” he added.

The girl was about 200 yards away from the others in the group watching for her, he said.

The girl was unresponsive when she was found, he added.

A medical helicopter was summoned and landed at Smith Park in Mainesburg, but when emergency personnel got her to the park, her condition had deteriorated, so she was taken by ambulance to Guthrie Troy Hospital, Welch said.
