2nd fire hits area business
For the second time under three months, a fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at the Williamsport Steel Container Co. at 360 Arch St., according to Assistant Fire Chief Mark Killian.
“A spark from a grinder ignited filters in the company’s dust collector system,” which took about 20 minutes for firefighters to extinguish, he said.
Company employees had already evacuated the structure when firefighters arrived on the scene to face smoke coming from the east side of the building about noon.
The fire was confined to the dust collector system, Killian said.
Employees that worked in that part of the plant were sent home, but operations were expected to resume today.
Firemen responded to the facility on Aug. 10 when a fire broke out in a large commercial oven.
That fire was quickly extinguished.
