Driver of car sought in hit-and-run crash

PHILIP A. HOLMES/Sun-Gazette The operator of this motorcycle was reported in serious condition at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night in South Williamsport.

South Williamsport police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the hit-and-run driver whose white Ford Fusion struck a motorcyclist head-on in the 100 block of Route 15 in the borough about 10:10 Wednesday night.

The northbound car struck the cyclist in the southbound lane and then continued two more blocks before turning west on Sixth Avenue, Police Chief Robert Hetner said.

He said investigators believe the car was a newer model, between 2013 and 2016, with front-end damage.

The motorcycle operator, Steven Kopera, 29, of Winfield, was hospitalized  with serious injuries, including a broken neck, Hetner said.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the car or the driver is asked to call police at 570-329-4066.

All information will be kept confidential, Hetner said.

“We’re talking to witnesses,” he said.

He urged the driver to turn himself in.
