City fire displaces mom and 4 kids, chimney blaze quelled

A mother and four children are temporarily displaced after a fire broke out in a bathroom in the family’s home at the Timberland Apartments, Building 4, 750 W. Edwin St., about 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, city fire officials said.

No one was injured in the fire, which was confined to the bathroom and brought under control in a matter of minutes, fire officials said. The family was staying with relatives. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The tenants should be able to return to the apartment in a matter of days once repairs are made, officials said.

About an hour before this incident, Clinton Township volunteer firefighters responded to a home in the 300 block of Davis Lane to extinguish a chimney fire, Fire Chief Todd Winder said.

“There were flames and sparks coming from the top of the chimney when we arrived on the scene,” he said. The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes. Washington Township volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene. No one was displaced, Winder said.
