Man jailed for alleged forgery

A South Williamsport man has been jailed on charges of presenting a letter in which he allegedly forged the name of city Mayor Gabriel J. Campana, according to city police.

Robert W. Lose Jr., 26, of 434 Hastings St., had-delivered the letter with the forged signature Oct. 11 to Barbara Banghart, a housing manager for a private firm that owns and manages a group of houses in the 600 block of Second Street, police said.

Earlier that same day, Banghart had served Lose a “No Trespassing” notice, ordering him to stay off the firm’s properties on Second Street, police said.

When Lose later appeared with the letter, he told Banghart it had been written by Campana and that he “could not be banned from the properties due to his Native American heritage,” an officer wrote in an affidavit.

The letter, with Campana’s signature, directed Banghart to allow Lose on the property, police said.

When questioned about the letter, Campana said he did not know Lose and that he did not write it or sign it, police said.

Arraigned last week before District Judge Jon E. Kemp on charges of forgery and defiant trespassing, Lose was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $15,000 bail.
