Fire in Newberry consumes structure

City firefighters and volunteer departments converged on this three-alarm structure fire in the 700 block of Poplar Street near the junction with Trenton Avenue in Newberry about 9:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived to the two-story building and saw flames shooting out of the first floor. An initial call indicated the building was unoccupied when firefighters arrived, but it was unclear if anyone was inside at the time. Shown here, multiple firefighters use a ladder truck to access the flat roof of the building. Heavy smoke could be seen covering the bucket as firefighters used power equipment to cut open roof in the battle. The fire was reported to be brought under control at 10:10 p.m.
