Water main break in the city

A Williamsport Municipal Water Authority crew was out yet again much of Saturday repairing another water main break, this time on Grampian Boulevard, just east of Warren Avenue, in Loyalsock Township. Workers have repaired a handful of such breaks in the region in the last two weeks, according to Chuck Hauser, the authority’s director of engineering. It is believed the breaks are due to the fluctuating soil conditions around the pipes, Hauser said, adding that when temperatures go from bitter cold to suddenly very mild and then back to cold, “the soil conditions can really vary,” and such changing conditions “are especially bad” for underground water pipes. Homes around Saturday’s break were without service until repairs were completed.
