Body found in South Side dugout

SETH NOLAN/Sun-Gazette Two South Williamsport police vehicles sit in the parking lot in front of the dugout at Lion’s Field Sunday evening.

A body was found in a South Williamsport baseball dugout Sunday evening.

Police still are in the preliminary phases of an investigation, but did confirm that the body was that of an adult female.

Police responded to the call of an individual inside the dugout on the third base side of Lion’s Field just off West Southern Avenue. Police were on scene about 5 p.m.

When police arrived, they determined that she was deceased, South Williamsport Police Chief Robert Hetner said. The Lycoming County Coroner’s Office arrived at the scene shortly after.

“We’re not sure what we have here yet,” Hetner said. “We are at the beginning stages of investigating the incident.”

Charles E. Kiessling Jr., county coroner, said the cause of death seemed to be an apparent suicide, but won’t be certain until a full investigation is completed.

Borough police will continue to work with the Lycoming County Coroner’s Office to determine a cause of death.
