Fire damages shed

PHILIP A. HOLMES/Sun-Gazette Heavy smoke was pouring from this large storage garage behind 48 Ivy Lane, off of Schnee Avenue, when Clinton Township volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene about 2:15 p.m. Sunday, according to township Fire Chief Todd Winder. “We had difficulty getting inside because the garage doors had (electrical) lifts, and the fire knocked out power to the building. There were no handles on the outside. We had to cut open the doors. There was a lot of heat and heavy black smoke inside,” Winder said. “It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control and 90 minutes to put it out. Everything in there is pretty much a total loss,” Winder told a reporter at the scene. The building is owned by Barry Smith, who lives on Ivy Lane. Washington Township volunteer firefighters also responded. A state police fire marshal was expected to be at the scene later today because the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire was ongoing.
