Loyalsock Township basement fire contained, couple displaced

PHILIP A. HOLMES/Sun-Gazette Firefighters in Loyalsock Township and the city worked quickly to contain this fire at 1200 Vallamont Drive, Northwest at 2:20 p.m. Saturday.

A couple living on Vallamont Drive for 50 years, just across the border from the city in Loyalsock Township, are staying with friends today after a basement fire blazed out of control about 2:20 p.m. Saturday, a fire official said.

Jay and Sue McCormick safely escaped their home after they discovered a fire in their basement at 1200 Vallamont Drive Northwest, said township Fire Chief Michael Minnier.

Firefighters from Loyalsock Township, Williamsport and several surrounding communities battled the fire for nearly an hour before it was brought under control.

Firefighters donned self-contained breathing apparatuses and carried hoses into the burning home.

One volunteer firefighter from the township suffered from smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire remained under investigation. Another firefighter also received treatment at the scene, but neither required medical transport, Minnier said.

The McCormick’s are staying temporarily with friends, Minnier said.

Firefighters remained at the scene until about 5:30 p.m., Minnier said.

A state police fire marshal will investigate the cause and origin of the fire, Minnier said.
