Playground equipment collapses, children injured

Emergency responders rushed to the Susquehanna State Park about 1 p,.m. Monday when a piece of playground equipment collapsed, injuring four children, according to officials. All the injuries were minor. The children were taken to UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center. There were no broken bones or major head trauma, officials said. There were numerous children on the swing when the wood frame supporting it gave way, injuring some of the children on its way down, fire officials said. It appeared that some of the frame underground had rotted, officials said. The children were among families that had just taken a cruise on the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat. The Hiawatha leases a certain part of the park from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which also provides the playground equipment, according to Michael Strunk, on-site manager and chief operating officer of the Hiawatha.
