Truck with load of pigs overturns on Route 15

City firefighters, using a hose, try to cool down some of the upset pigs.

The Route 15 South spur in the city was closed for several hours after a trailer hauling 161 pigs overturned about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, city police said. The driver, a 65-year-old Wellsboro man, climbed out of his rig on his own with minor facial injuries. City firefighters used a hose to try to cool down some of the upset pigs.

The pigs, picked up in New York state, were en route to a meat packing plant near Philadelphia. The company that owned the pigs responded to the scene and ended up having to euthanize some of the livestock that had bolted out of a section of the trailer, police said. The remaining live pigs were corralled into another trailer that was brought to the scene, police said. The truck’s two saddle tanks were filled with a total of 130 gallons of diesel fuel and some of it leaked into the ground, city fire officials said.
