Body of 84-year-old lost hunter found in Sullivan County
LOPEZ — The 84-year-old Luzerne County hunter missing since last week was found dead late Monday afternoon in some dense woods by a search team, according to Sullivan County Coroner Wendy Hastings.
The death of Walter Booth, of Courtdale, has been ruled “accidental,” adding that the man died of hypothermia “due to prolong exposure to extensive rain and wind,” Hastings said.
While Booth was “properly attired to go hunting,” he was not prepared for the conditions he suddenly faced when a very intense storm struck the county overnight Tuesday, Hastings said.
Although the region did not experience a tornado, still heavy rain and very strong winds pounded the area as Booth was hunting, Hastings said.
Booth was located about two miles from his pickup truck in an area that had not been searched before, Hastings explained.
He left his house on Tuesday afternoon to go hunting. When he failed to return home early Wednesday morning, his wife notified authorities.
More than 150 people took part in the extensive six-day search.
