Scrap pile at recycling center catches fire

Flames broke out about 2:20 p.m. Monday in a 65-foot high scrap pile at Penn Recycling Inc., 3300 Trenton Ave., in Williamsport’s Newberry neighborhood. The blaze went to three alarms by 3:30 p.m. and continued burning when this video was posted about 4:30 p.m. Thick black and gray smoke billowed several hundred feet into the air. The smoke was visible in all directions for several miles. There were no reports of injuries, but a team of paramedics stood by at the scene. Joining city firefighters in battling the fire were volunteer firemen from Montoursville, Old Lycoming Township, Woodward Township, Montoursville, South Williamsport, DuBoistown and Jersey Shore.
