Blossburg cartoonist makes his way to national contest finals
Lonnie Frost has been drawing for as long as he can remember.
The Blossburg man who also is a freelance photographer for the Williamsport Sun-Gazette is one of a dozen amateur cartoonists remaining in the national “So Ya Wanna Be a Cartoonist” contest, sponsored by The Cartoonist Studio.
“Some of the cartoonists (in the contest) have over 20 years of hands-on experience in the cartooning world, while other cartoonists are unknown and have very little experience in the cartoon world, like myself,” Frost said. “The winner of this contest will receive a small cash prize and an ultimate prize of being mentored by one of the site’s professional cartoonists.”
Frost was one of 122 entrants in the contest when it began in February, a number that’s been whittled down by online voting. He placed second in six straight rounds before finishing first in the ninth and penultimate round.
The cartoons Frost has created for the contest, “Wild Tails,” is a series of single panels chronicling numerous animal anthropomorphic adventures.
“I have drawn and colored each of my 10 cartoons as I needed them,” he said. “Most often it has taken me up to five days to finish a complete cartoon. Then I use an old paint program to clean up the image and add the lettering.”
During childhood, drawing became one of Frost’s pastimes when he couldn’t venture outdoors.
“I spent a great deal of my time inside due to having severe asthma and serious allergies, and I also spent a great deal of time at doctor appointments or in the hospital,” he said.
“My greatest inspiration comes from Charles Schulz. My life seemed to mimic that of Charlie Brown’s. Due to health problems, I did not feel like I fit in – I was quiet and very shy.”
Winning a month’s worth of mentorship from a professional cartoonist will help Frost improve his work and navigate the world of syndication, he said.
The contest runs through 11:59 p.m. Saturday night.
Voting for Frost is permitted once every six hours by any individual before that time at thecartooniststudio.com/Contestant/137/Lonny-Frost.
