Wellsboro schools enrollment up

WELLSBORO – Preliminary enrollment figures for the upcoming school year show an increase of seven students, said Wellsboro Area School District Superintendent Chris Morral at Tuesday’s board meeting.

“Last June we had 1,512 students. Projected we are on target to bring on 1,519, up seven as of today,” he said.

He also praised Scott Heck and the custodial staff for getting the schools ready for the new school year to begin Sept. 3.

“It’s been a busy summer and the summer has come and gone. It is incredible how much work these people do during the summer,” Morral said.

Final preparations for staffing has consumed a lot of time, he added.

“Aug. 28 is the first day back for professional staff and we have three days packed with preparations,” Morral said.

Morral also said that all capital projects are “shaping up.”

“I do expect come the first student day we should be ready,” he added.

Among the projects being done is concrete work to the lower level entrance of the Rock L. Butler Middle School.

Middle school Principal Mike Pietropola said there has been “lots of painting done, and work on the roof complete.

Robert Kreger, assistant principal for the high school, said that fall sports practices started Monday, and the numbers are “steady or up.”

“Everyone is reporting to practices. It is a good start overall,” he said.

In other business, the board accepted four resignations. They are: Melissa Kulka, school psychologist, effective July 3; Rachel Thompson, middle school special education instructional aide, effective Aug. 3; Kimberly Smith, middle school music teacher, effective Aug. 27; and Carolyn Mitchell, high school girls soccer head coach, effective immediately.

The board also granted tenure to five teachers including Nathan Babcock, Health and Physical Education; Tiffany Springsted Getty, Chemistry; Lara Miller, French; Benjamin Miller, Social Studies; and Shane Mascho, Counselor.

The board also:

Approved keeping school meal prices the same as last year.

Approved two transfers, including, Tina Stadler from part time custodian at Rock L. Butler Middle School to part time custodian at Don Gill Elementary School with pay rate remaining at $14.20 per hour; and Morgan Shaffer from elementary librarian to middle school music teacher, effective Aug. 28, with a salary of $48,155.

Approved new hires including, Carly Bowen Clark, kindergarten teacher, effective Aug. 28, and Annette Nuss, long-term substitute sixth grade teacher for 2013-14, at a salary of $44,155 each; Joyce Butler, high school Special Education instructional aide, part time, at $10.91 per hour after 60 days; Leslie Hilton, middle school Special Education instructional aide, at $10.91 per hour after 60 days and Amanda Nolan, Charlotte Lappla Special Education instructional aide, $10.91 per hour after 60 days.
