PennDOT: Register for organ donation to save lives
The state Department of Transportation recently encouraged driver license and identification holders to help others in need of organ and tissue transplants live longer, better lives by registering to be an organ donor during National Donate Life Month in April.
Nearly 46 percent of driver’s license and identification card holders are registered organ donors -that’s more than 4.5 million Pennsylvanians.
More than 8,500 Pennsylvanians await organ transplants.
“Potential donors can take action today to add the organ donor designation to their license or identification card, rather than waiting for renewal time,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “The 90 seconds you spend online requesting the designation for your license or identification card could potentially save a life.”
To add the organ donor designation to an existing driver’s license or identification card today, visit www.dmv.state.pa.us and select the “Donate Life Pennsylvania” icon at the bottom of the page.
Once the designation is added, individuals will receive a designation card that they will have to carry with them to affirm organ donor status until they renew or replace their driver’s license or identification card. There is no charge for adding the designation to a driver’s license or identification card.
Driver’s license and identification card holders, as well as registered vehicle owners, also may support organ donation programs by donating $1 to the Robert P. Casey Memorial Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Trust Fund at the time of application, renewal or replacement.
Proceeds from the fund are used to educate and promote awareness of the organ donor program through non-profit organizations such as the Center for Organ Recovery and Education and the Gift of Life Donor Program.
Pennsylvanians have donated more than $11.5 million to the fund to date.
As part of ongoing efforts to increase awareness of organ and tissue donation, video monitors featuring educational content are installed at 20 PennDOT driver’s license centers.
More information on organ and tissue donation in Pennsylvania can be found at www.donatelife-pa.org.

A PennDOT maintenance crew in Montour County will construct two roadway widening projects in April.
The first project will take place along Route 2111 (Sharp Ridge Road) in Mayberry Township from Monday through April 16, weather permitting. Work will take place between High and Susquehanna roads.
Traffic will be detoured weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily using Little Roaring Creek Road and Susquehanna Road.
On April 17-18, weather permitting; the crew will widen a section of Route 2006 (River Drive) near Clinic Road in Mahoning Township.
Traffic will be detoured using Clinic Road, Route 11 and Railroad Street for that project.
During both projects, school buses will have access to their normal routes (mornings and afternoons) and will not be affected by the detours.
Lower Arnot Road bridge replacement project starts Monday
A PennDOT bridge crew in Tioga County will begin a bridge replacement project on Route 2023 (Lower Arnot Road) in Bloss Township on Monday.
The existing 28-foot-long bridge over Sawmill Creek was built in 1964.
The project is in the Village of Arnot, just south of the Arnot Road and Lower Arnot Road intersection.
The existing bridge will be removed and a new precast concrete box culvert will be installed on the same alignment. The roadway approaches will then be reconstructed and all other work needed to open the new bridge to traffic will be done.
While the project is underway, the road will be closed at the bridge. Traffic will be detoured onto Arnot and Bloss Mountain roads.
The new bridge is expected to be in service by mid-June, weather permitting.
Route 220 bridge replacement in
Sullivan County starts
A $2.4 million bridge replacement project on Route 220 (German Street) in Dushore Borough, Sullivan County, is set to start Monday.
The contract also includes 1.7 miles of highway resurfacing in Dushore and Cherry Township.
The existing single-span concrete bridge over Little Loyalsock Creek, near the intersection with Water Street, was built in 1925 and is classified as structurally deficient.
The project includes replacing the old bridge with a new concrete structure on the existing alignment, drainage improvements, and concrete curb and sidewalk.
Work also includes roadway base repairs and pavement resurfacing (mill and overlay) of Route 220 from the Route 87 intersection south of the borough to the Main Street intersection at the traffic signal, base repairs and pavement resurfacing (mill and overlay) of Route 87 (East Main, Mill and Carpenter streets) from the Route 220 intersection to just west of the Dushore Borough/Cherry Township line, and membrane waterproofing of the existing bridge deck on Route 87 (East Main Street) over Little Loyalsock Creek.
During construction of the new bridge, vehicular traffic will be detoured along the following:
- Route 220 truck traffic – Old Bernice Road, Route 487 and Route 87;
Route 220 southbound car traffic – Main, Center and Julia streets;
Route 220 northbound car traffic – Water, Turnpike and Main streets;
- Route 87 truck traffic – Route 220, Old Bernice Road and Route 487;
- Route 87 southbound car traffic – Main, Center and Julia streets;
- Route 87 northbound car traffic – Water Street.
Traffic detours for the bridge replacement are tentatively scheduled to start on June 16 and end on Sept. 18.
Prior to the detours, the contractor will do repair work on two truck-detour routes, Old Bernice Road and Route 487. This work will start Monday.
The resurfacing portions of the contract will take place once the new bridge is in service.
All work under is scheduled to be completed by late November.
