Tour offered of Lewisburg Cemetery
LEWISBURG – A tour of the Lewisburg Cemetery will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, beginning at the chapel near the cemetery entrance on South Seventh and St. George streets.
Baseball fans travel many miles just to visit the grave of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson, while others come looking for the graves of Medal of Honor winner George Ramer, Col. John Kelly, Civil War veterans, and the “three Marys” of Bucknell University.
The tour will point out these and other notable figures who were laid to rest in the cemetery. It also will highlight monument designs and symbols, among them the carvings of Chancey Foster, who built the cemetery chapel.
The tour will be led by author Robert Dunkerly and Nancy Neuman, president of the Lewisburg Cemetery Association.
Dunkerly is the author of “A Beautifully Solemn Scene: The Lewisburg Cemetery.” A native of Lewisburg, he is a park ranger and historian at Richmond National Battlefield Park in Virginia.
