Strong Women/Growing Stronger Program to begin fall programs

The Penn State Extension will sponsor two fall sessions of The Strong Women/Growing Stronger program beginning Aug. 18 in Nauvoo and Blossburg. At the end of spring sessions, participants at both locations reported benefits including increased strength, reduced joint pain, increased energy and having fun.

Nauvoo classes will meet at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 44 Linck Hill Road, Morris. An introductory meeting will be held on Aug. 18 and exercise classes will begin Aug. 25, and continue on Mondays and Wednesdays (except Sept. 1) from 10-11:15 a.m. Classes will end Nov. 17.

Blossburg classes will meet at the United Methodist Church, 1108 N. Williamson Road. The Introductory meeting will be held Aug. 18 with exercise classes beginning Sept. 3 and meeting most Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-7:15 p.m. Classes will end Dec. 10.

The introductory meeting provides additional details about the program. Required paperwork also is completed. First-time participants who cannot attend at either location should call 570-265-2896 to have paperwork sent before the first exercise class.

In their mid-40s, women begin to lose one-quarter to one-third of a pound of muscle each year and gain that much – or more – in fat. Loss of strength can make everyday tasks more difficult. Women over 40 also begin to lose bone density. This can lead to osteoporosis and increased risk of life-altering fractures.

Strong Women/Growing Stronger is a simple and effective progressive strength-training program. It was originally designed by researchers at Tufts University to help women over 40 reduce bone loss, increase strength, and improve balance. Men also can benefit.

Under the direction of a certified instructor, participants learn to use hand and ankle weights correctly and safely. They also do stretching and balance exercises. Individuals work at their own level. Past participants, including those over 80, have found that daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, and doing house/yard work become easier. Many also improve bone strength and prevent further bone loss.

Besides activity, the Strong Women/Growing Stronger group program offers support and motivation for those who find it hard to make exercise a habit. Nutrition information that supports bone density and over-all health also is provided. Hand and ankle weights will be available for participants. Classes canceled due to snow will be made up at the end of the 12-week program. A fee will be charged.
