Local graduate is commissioned as naval officer
Erik C. Tokarz, son of Gerard and Donna Tokarz, of Montoursville, was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy on May 20, 2017.
Tokarz is a 2012 graduate of Montoursville Area High School and a 2017 graduate of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he received a bachelor of science degree in physics, with a minor in mathematics.
While a student at Duquesne, Tokarz also was a scholarship midshipman in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps, which is a comprehensive program to prepare midshipmen for commissioning as officers into the Navy or Marine Corps after graduation.
In addition to the university academic degree course work and requirements, the program includes naval science classes and labs, other Navy-specified courses, military drill and physical training, leadership training and opportunities, summer active duty training and extracurricular activities.
Tokarz lives in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and is serving as a division officer aboard the USS Detroit, a Freedom-class littoral combat ship, homeported at Naval Station Mayport, Florida.
