Advent lesson and carols

‘Christmas is Coming’ musical
CANTON – The Canton-Troy area’s Advent/Christmas Tradition continues with the 2013 Christmas musical special “CHRISTMAS IS COMING … Sing for Joy,” at the Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), 170 N. Minnequa Ave. The Christmas Celebration Conglomeration, which consists of 75-plus Canton/Troy area adults, youth and children, is the area’s premier ecumenical, seasonal, musical organization. Presentations are scheduled for 7 and 8:30 p.m. Dec. 5-6-7. Perogi, baklava, bake and craft sales set
The auxiliary of Holy Cross Orthodox Church, 1725 Holy Cross Lane in Loyalsock Township, will hold perogi sales on Dec. 6, with pickup between noon and 3 p.m., and trays of baklava, a rich Greek dessert, with pickup Dec. 13. The auxiliary will hold its holiday bake and craft sale in the Orthodox Fellowship Center at noon Dec. 15. Proceeds benefit charitable programs and the parish education fund. Alternative Christmas Fair
WELLSBORO – First Presbyterian Church, 130 Main St., will hold its fourth annual Alternative Christmas Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. where shoppers will have the opportunity to buy a box of nails, a cot and bedding, or other such items for needy persons and communities that can be given on behalf of themselves or another. The person in whose name the gift is given will receive an appropriate card informing them of the gift. Seeds of Hope Partners, Wellsboro Food Pantry, The Samaritan House, Haven, the Wellsboro Area Salvation Army, Tioga County Homeless Initiative, Friends of Laurel Health, His Thousand Hills and Child Evangelism Fellowship have been invited to participate. Last year’s event raised close to $5,000 for area ministries.
JERSEY SHORE – A Christmas Bazaar, including lunch and dinner, will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 229 S. Broad St. A lunch of a hot dog or a barbecue platter will be available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for $3. The turkey dinner will be served from 4-6 p.m. Takeouts will be available. The cost is by donation. There also will be baked goods, including cookie trays, a greens table, hand-crafted items and ceramics for sale all day.

Christmas concert scheduled
AVIS – Avis United Methodist Church, 215 Prospect Ave., will present its annual free concert at 6:45 p.m. The choir will sing various selections, as well as the congregation singing hymns. Soloists will be Jim Allen, Cindy Flook, John Fisher, Beverly Schmidt and Kent Weiland. Piano and organ duets will be played by Kay Knarr-Fisher and Conrad Schlesinger. Childcare will be provided and refreshments will be served after the concert.

Church celebrates new pastor
Covenant Central Presbyterian Church, 807 W. Fourth St., will celebrate the arrival of its new pastor, the Rev. Elizabeth Affsprung, during its 11 a.m. worship service. Affsprung is a 1987 graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary and has served as a youth pastor, hospital chaplain and visitation pastor in the Philadelphia area. She served First Presbyterian Church in Watsontown for 11 years and most recently First Presbyterian Church in Sunbury since 2008.

Pack ‘n wrap Sunday
Among the area churches helping with Operation Christmas Child, a group of adults and children will fill and wrap boxes at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 142 N. Market St., at noon Sunday. A light lunch will be served at the pack ‘n wrap. After the boxes are filled and wrapped, they are taken to the Pine Street Methodist Church from where they will be shipped. They are distributed overseas by Samaritan’s Purse, an organization run by Rev. Franklin Graham, the son of Dr. Billy Graham.
Newberry Church of Christ, 2101 Linn St. in Newberry, will hold a concert at 6 p.m. featuring Rhoda Kiess and Ravi Evans, Sarah Kriner and David and Miriam Albert. A free-will offering will be taken.
