HUGHESVILLE – The Friends Church held a groundbreaking ceremony and land consecration service July 6 for its newest expansion project. Lead Pastor Dan Cale conducted the service and led the congregation in a prayer of consecration for the land and facilities.
After the worship service the congregation was invited to participate in the ceremony, along with guests Pastor Dick Gessling and Art Marquardt.
Over 40 years ago, Gessling was responsible for leading the Friends Church in the original purchase of the land that the building presently sits on. Marquardt was a member of the original building committee in the early 1970s. The committee had the foresight to build a facility that was able to be easily modified for future growth.
The building expansion will increase the size of the fellowship hall by over 2,100 square feet, which is more than double the current size. The kitchen will be significantly expanded and upgraded. In addition there will be new audio visual and sound equipment, a new ADA accessible restroom, expanded storage and upgraded tables and chairs.
“Expanding our fireside room (fellowship hall) will allow us to grow and to be more effective as a caring, ministering and mission-minded church,” said Matt McGovern, family life pastor, “it allows for special programming like coffee houses, concerts, speakers, luncheons and other ministries to reach a growing community.”
Tiadaghton Contractors Inc., of South Williamsport, will handle the construction with an anticipated four-month construction time frame from groundbreaking to completion.
