God’s hidden wisdom

The New Testament teaches that Jesus Christ defeated Satan by his death on the cross. Further that Satan was “paraded through” the spirit-world and openly humiliated in the unseen realm (Colossians 2:15). All this was accomplished by the hidden wisdom of God to redeem the human race.

“However, we do speak a wisdom among the mature, but not a wisdom of this age, or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. On the contrary, we speak God’s hidden wisdom in a mystery, a wisdom God predestined before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age knew this wisdom, for if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:6-8).

The “rulers of this age,” if they had known the implications of their acts, never would have crucified Jesus. The “rulers” mentioned here are both the visible (Herod, Pontus Pilate, and Caiaphas) and invisible (principalities and powers of the demonic/satanic variety). These rulers plotted to put Christ to death.

But just as God lured Pharaoh into the Red Sea to destroy him and the Egyptian army (Exodus 14), Satan was lured into a battle where his dominion over the world was broken. This is the greatest story ever told.

There was a recent incident that may serve as a limited illustration.

Dr. David Dao’s story was plastered all over the news. This is the man that didn’t want to give up his seat on an airline flight. Regardless of Dao’s resistance, the videos of a bleeding 69-year-old man being dragged down the aisle of a plane were shocking.

Did anyone have any doubt that there would be a lawsuit following? Was there any doubt about the outcome of that case? In fact, it was settled within 10 days of the incident for a substantial (undisclosed) amount. Whatever the amount, Dao was vindicated and airlines have changed their policies accordingly. If the security guards and the corporate executives had known how much it would have cost them, they would have left that man alone.

Likewise, Jesus was illegally arrested, tried, abused, whipped and crucified. Upon His death, His soul descended into hell where He was vindicated (justified) after three days. His resurrection was just the beginning of His vindication. The compensatory and punitive damaged awarded to Jesus were and are so massive that they produced a whole new creation superior to that of Genesis chapter 1 and 2. These reparations include (in part) everlasting life, physical healing, forgiveness of all sin, justification if sinners, spiritual adoption by God Himself and a New Covenant that never will end.

The wisdom of this plan was hidden in God from the foundation of the world. Jesus knew this plan and let it happen intentionally, knowing what the outcome would be. Thus both the justice and the mercy of God simultaneously were satisfied. Sin and evil were exposed and judged while God’s mercy and grace have been displayed and offered to “whom-so-ever will” put their trust in the saving work of God in Christ.

He hid it and did it for us. All the benefits are shared with those who believe and receive Jesus Christ as Lord. This is how God offers salvation to the whole world through Jesus Christ. This is how God so loved the world. This is how God so loved you. If you can receive this, all these things are yours — today. A-men!
