Roan’s Storage: An 80-year family affair

Roan’s Transfer & Storage, 2100 Whitney St., has made business a family affair for over 80 years, and the Roans say they plan to keep truckin’.

In 1932 Frank L. Roan bought two trucks and began to haul used furniture.

Today that business has grown into a full service moving company acting as an agent for Mayflower Transit, helping people and businesses move locally or even worldwide.

June is the company’s busiest month of the year. Their business typically peaks during the summer.

“Parents often wait until the summer to move their children so they don’t have to take them out of school in the middle of the year,” Lori, wife of current owner Tom Roan, said.

Current owner Tom Roan’s son, Andrew, joined the family business in 2012, marking the 5th generation to contribute.

Roan’s younger son Jacob and sister-in-law Renee are also part of the Williamsport-based moving company.

Jacob said working with his family means conversations at the dinner table are consumed with the topic of work and at the office everyone still acts like a family.

“It’s the best and worst part of the job, all in one,” he said.

Even the other employees that are not technically related to the Roans are welcomed as part of the family.

“The newest guy has been with the company for about 10 years,” Andrew said. “They’re like family, we hang out with each other on the weekends.”

Moving companies have a unique experience of taking every possession a person or family has onto a truck and driving off with it.

Lori stressed the importance of the customer trusting everyone they come in contact with, from Renee to the movers.

“We have wonderful employees that go into a home and treat it with respect like it was their own,” she said. “Moving is stressful, we want customers to be comfortable us.”

Though Roan’s Transfer & Storage has expanded into a full service moving company capable of giving its customers virtually everything they could need, that doesn’t mean the Roans have forgotten their humble beginnings or don’t work as hard.

In fact, Tom Roan is still out on the truck every day working with his employees, giving himself completely to the company and the customer.

Roan’s Transfer & Storage offers full service in Bradford, Centre, Clinton, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga and Union counties.
