Both drivers killed in Route 220 crash
SALONA – Both drivers were killed and three children were seriously injured late Tuesday afternoon in a violent head-on crash on Route 220, not far from the intersection with Auction Road in Lamar Township.
The children were flown by medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Witnesses at the scene reported the car was southbound and had just passed another southbound vehicle when it collided head-on with the northbound mini-van about 4:20 p.m.
“The impact was terrific … the motor of the car was pushed through the dashboard into the front seat,” one of the witnesses said.
A long line of vehicles was backed up from the intersection with Auction Road to the Salona exit of Route 220. Some motorists who were close to the accident left their vehicles and were unable to return to them because the area was cordoned off.
Route 220 from the intersection with Interstate 80 to the Salona exit remained closed for several hours as state police from Lamar and Lamar Township police investigated.
No further information was available by press time Tuesday night.
