Life lost in Lewis Township wreck

TROUT RUN – A young man killed late Saturday night in a one-car fiery crash at Route 14 and Field Station Road in Lewis Township died of multiple blunt force trauma, burns and smoke inhalation, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.

Joshua S. Smith, 26, of Branaka Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 11 p.m. crash.

Smith was traveling north on Route 14 when he failed to negotiate a right turn, state police said. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo he was driving went off the west side of the road and struck a traffic sign and a rock cliff before overturning, police said.

Kiessling said the car then caught on fire. A truck driver who came upon the crash doused the fire with two portable extinguishers he had in his truck, but he could not put it out nor could he reach Smith, Kiessling said.
