Nonprofit presents Muncy board with funding options

Muncy’s School Board heard a presentation Monday night by the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania on possible methods of increasing revenue from sources other than taxation.

“You’re going to want to be focused on alumni and local business leaders,” said Glenn Smith, of the foundation.

The foundation helps school districts invest endowment and scholarship funds, Smith said.

The foundation helps school districts with getting monies from Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit program.

The tax credit program allows businesses to give a percentage of their state tax to local school districts, instead of directly to the state, said Dawn Linn, of the foundation.

Businesses within the Muncy School District that recently have participated include The Muncy Bank and Trust and Woodlands Bank.

The state caps how much each district can receive through the tax credit.

“That money is available for a block of time, and if we don’t formulate successful grants for it, that money goes away,” said Dr. Portia Brandt, Muncy schools superintendent. “This is where we get the money to send the kids to the Community Arts Center.”

“Montgomery bought iPads,” Linn said. “But this money isn’t meant to buy specific equipment – you have to write (the grant) so that it’s marked for a specific program.”
